Equal PDF — from Equal Vision
Make every document accessible — including the ones that break other tools.
Equal PDF is a new approach to PDF remediation. It rebuilds each document from the ground up, so a screen reader gives blind and partially sighted readers a true and accurate reflection of the page — text, tables, forms, and the mathematical, scientific, and technical content other tools cannot handle.
Vision & benefit
Equal access is now the standard — and the law.
Accessibility puts blind and partially sighted people on an equal footing with everyone else. For public universities and government institutions, it is also a legal requirement under ADA Title II. Equal PDF helps you meet that standard across your entire document library — accurately, and in one place.
Nothing about us without us.
How it works
A fresh approach: rebuild, do not patch.
Most tools patch an existing file and hope the tags hold. We take the opposite view. If a document is one percent wrong, it is one hundred percent wrong to the person relying on a screen reader. Equal PDF rebuilds the document from the ground up — structural tags, reading order, text, forms, and tables — in a single pass, with full coverage of your library.
-
Ingest
Bring in a single file or an entire library.
-
Rebuild and tag
Equal PDF reconstructs the document with correct structure, reading order, and tagging in one pass.
-
Review and approve
Your team confirms each document with a fast, guided checklist.
What makes it different
The content that breaks every other tool.
Equations. Scientific notation. Technical figures and charts. The material at the heart of STEM, medicine, and engineering is exactly where conventional remediation fails. The default tools most institutions already own were built to tag prose; they stumble on multi-line equations and single mathematical symbols, and at best they describe an equation in a sentence. Equal PDF treats the mathematics as structure a screen reader can navigate — not a caption to skim — so one platform covers every faculty instead of a patchwork of products.
A sentence about an equation is not the equation. Readers deserve to explore the mathematics, not hear a summary of it.
Structure a screen reader can navigate, not a sentence to skim
Typical tool — flat alt text
What the screen reader announces
“Image: the quadratic formula, x equals negative b plus or minus the square root of b squared minus four a c, all over two a.”
- One block of prose. Nothing to step into.
- No way to inspect a single term, exponent, or radical.
- Re-reading means hearing the whole sentence again.
Equal PDF — navigable structure
What the reader can explore
- equation — x = …
- fraction
- numerator: −b ± √(b² − 4ac)
- radical: b² − 4ac (the discriminant)
- denominator: 2a
- numerator: −b ± √(b² − 4ac)
- fraction
- Each part is a node the reader can move into and out of.
- Numerator, denominator, radical, and exponent are addressable.
- Explore it like sighted readers do — term by term.
Illustrative structure. The underlying tagging follows MathML so assistive technology can traverse the expression rather than read a description of it.
The position we own
Equal PDF is the only PDF remediation platform that handles your entire document library — forms, tables, scanned files, and scientific and mathematical content — in one workflow, with accuracy validated on the content that breaks every other tool.
| Capability | Equal PDF | Typical remediation tools |
|---|---|---|
| Structural tags & reading order | Yes | Yes |
| Text, tables, and forms | Yes | Yes |
| Scanned documents (OCR) | Yes | Partial |
| Equations & scientific notation, screen-reader navigable | Yes, native | No — or described in alt text |
| Technical figures & charts | Yes, native | Limited |
| Every faculty in one workflow | Yes | Multiple products |
| Accuracy validated against a published rubric | Yes | Blanket guarantee, soft %, or none |
Review & approval
Review and approve in minutes, not months.
Remediation should not create a second full-time job. Equal PDF gives your team a fast, guided checklist to review and approve each document — clear, efficient, and built for people who are not accessibility specialists. You stay in control of what ships; we make getting there straightforward.
- Reading order flows the way the page is meant to be read.
- Tables, forms, and figures carry the right structure and labels.
- Equations and scientific notation are navigable, not just described.
- Every document is signed off before it ships.
Compliance
Built for ADA Title II.
Under ADA Title II, state and local government entities — including public universities — must bring their web content and digital documents into conformance with WCAG 2.1 Level AA. The U.S. Department of Justice set the standard in its 2024 final rule; the compliance dates now stand at April 26, 2027 for entities serving populations of 50,000 or more, and April 26, 2028 for smaller entities and special district governments.
Larger public entities
Total population of 50,000 or more.
Smaller entities & special districts
Total population under 50,000, and special district governments.
WCAG 2.1 Level AA
The technical standard
Applies to web content and digital documents for both deadlines.
Equal PDF is a direct route to compliance for your document library: accurate remediation, coverage across every faculty, and a review process your team can actually run. This is the right product at the right time.
About
Who we are.
Equal Vision is a small technology company built on a simple idea: accessible documents should be the default, not an afterthought. We are Adi and Nick. We built Equal PDF because the hardest documents — the ones full of equations, figures, and dense structure — were the ones being left behind.
